In today's fast-paced world, where smartphones, online banking, and virtual meetings have become part of daily life, it's easy to take digital skills for granted. But what happens when you don't have these skills? Gail Porter, TV personality and mental health advocate, found out firsthand during a week-long challenge of living completely offline. Her experience sheds light on the reality faced by many individuals without access to or understanding of digital technology, a challenge the Better Boscombe initiative is tackling head-on.
Empowering Boscombe Through Digital Skills
Boscombe's Digital Skills Hub, supported by the Good Things Foundation, is on a mission to address digital exclusion. Since its inception, the Hub has offered free weekly Digital Discovery courses, enabling residents to develop essential skills. From beginners learning the basics to intermediates honing their knowledge, these courses are changing lives and bridging the digital divide.
In October, during 'Get Online Week' (October 14-20), the Good Things Foundation captured the impact of these efforts through a compelling case study video. Featuring Gail Porter and Boscombe residents, the video highlights how digital literacy can empower individuals to navigate an increasingly online world.
Gail Porter's Offline Challenge
To bring attention to the difficulties of life without digital skills, Gail embarked on a week long challenge of living offline. No emails, no smartphones, no online grocery shopping, it was an eye-opening experience. The challenge underscored how deeply intertwined our lives have become with the digital world, from managing finances to staying connected with loved ones.
Following her offline experiment, Gail visited the Digital Skills Hub to meet the people making a difference and experience the transformative power of their courses. Joining a Digital Discovery class, Gail gained insights from tutor Andy Merchant and interviewed key figures like Rebecca Davies, Head of Enterprise, Skills and Industry at Dorset LEP.
Transformative Stories: From Beginner to Digital Champion
Among the residents Gail met was Ann, a participant who has journeyed from being a digital beginner to becoming a digital champion. Ann's story is a testament to the Hub's impact. The confidence and skills she has gained through the courses have not only improved her life but also inspired others to take the first step toward digital literacy.
For Ann, learning to use technology meant being able to reconnect with family and access services that once seemed out of reach. Her journey exemplifies the positive ripple effect these initiatives create within the community.
Staying Safe Online: A Focus on Cybersecurity
In addition to offering courses, the Hub recognises the importance of online safety. During Get Online Week, the Hub hosted a Stay Cyber Safe workshop on October 16. Experts like Dr. Phil Wilkinson and Dr. Jane Henriksen-Bulmer from Bournemouth University joined Andy Merchant to teach residents about avoiding scams, protecting their digital footprints, and creating strong passwords.
The workshop's aim was clear: empower residents to engage online with confidence and security. This commitment to safety complements the Hub's broader mission to equip Boscombe's residents with the skills they need to thrive in the digital age.
A Hub of Opportunity
The Digital Skills Hub offers more than just beginner and intermediate courses. Its Digital Discovery banner includes programs on Microsoft Office, ICT for Employment, ChatGPT & WIX, and a tailored Get to Know Your Device initiative. These opportunities are designed to meet the diverse needs of Boscombe's community, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital revolution.
The Hub is more than a training center, it's a lifeline for those seeking independence, confidence, and opportunity in a world increasingly shaped by technology.
Join The Digital Revolution
The journey to digital literacy is transformative, as highlighted by the inspiring stories from Boscombe. Whether it's Ann becoming a digital champion or Gail Porter gaining a deeper appreciation of the skills we often take for granted, the message is clear: digital inclusion changes lives.
