The Old School House (TOSH) is Boscombe’s go-to spot for creative minds to connect and collaborate. Based in a Victorian Grade II-listed building on Gladstone Road, it acts as a dedicated coworking and events space for professionals, start-ups, and small businesses in all kinds of creative industries.
As part of our ongoing regeneration efforts of Boscombe, we're upgrading TOSH’s infrastructure to make it an even better space to work all year round. Keep reading to learn more about TOSH's history and our exciting plans for its future!
TOSH offers a treasure trove of facilities designed for creative businesses to thrive. Here's what you'll find:
The building itself retains the magnificent open timber-framed ceilings and grand fireplaces of its Victorian origins, all perfectly complemented by a stylish, modern interior. Just round the corner, you'll find stunning beaches, charming local shops, and trendy cafes and restaurants - the perfect blend of work and play to inspire you and your team.
You can learn more about TOSH and book a free tour of their facilities by visiting their website.
The Old School House first opened its doors in 1878 as a school for local children (hence the name!). The foundation stone was laid on August 21st by Sir Percy Florence Shelley, son of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley and poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
After the school outgrew its space, the building found a new vocation in 1962 as the award-winning Bournemouth Drama Centre. Its alumni include renowned choirmaster and broadcaster Gareth Malone and fashion designer Graham Fraser. From the 1990s, it was run by Bournemouth Borough Council as an adult education centre.
In July 2008, English Heritage recognised its architectural significance and awarded it Grade II listing. It had its interior modernised in 2014 in order to become the beautiful coworking and events space it stands as today.
In the near future, we'll be investing in upgrades to the building’s windows, heating, and insulation to make it more energy-efficient. This will save on energy costs while creating a more comfortable space for everyone inside. We'll also make sure these upgrades blend in with the building's stunning Victorian architecture, so it keeps all its old-world charm. The end result? A beautiful, functional space that combines modern features with classic character, perfect for current tenants and future businesses alike.
