Woodland Walk

Woodland Walk Nature Reserve is a valued green corridor linking Christchurch Road, Boscombe town centre and the seafront. Since the project began, significant improvements have been delivered to enhance safety, accessibility, biodiversity and community use, while carefully protecting the woodland's natural character.

As part of the Better Boscombe programme, Woodland Walk plays an important role in encouraging walking, exploration and active travel, helping people move more easily between the beach, the town centre and surrounding neighbourhoods. The improvements support healthier lifestyles, stronger connections and a more welcoming environment for everyone who uses the space.

Community Impact and Project Achievements

Woodland Walk has been enhanced to support everyday use by residents, visitors and families, while contributing to wider transport and regeneration improvements across Boscombe.

Key outcomes include:

  • clearer, safer walking routes that encourage regular use
  • improved links between the seafront, Woodland Walk and Boscombe's shopping and leisure areas
  • a more welcoming environment that encourages people to explore the wider area on foot
  • improved public realm that supports positive activity and natural surveillance

Together, these changes help increase footfall, promote physical mobility, and strengthen connections between key destinations.

Supporting Walking, Movement and Connectivity

A core aim of the project has been to make Woodland Walk an attractive, intuitive route for walking and informal recreation. The improvements complement wider transport works in the area, including upgrades along Christchurch Road, helping encourage walking and cycling as practical, everyday choices.

Delivered improvements include:

  • upgraded walking paths to improve clarity, visibility and ease of movement
  • improved entrances that clearly invite people into the reserve
  • better wayfinding to support movement between the beach, Woodland Walk and the town centre
  • resurfacing works that improve comfort while respecting the woodland setting

These changes support healthier travel habits and make it easier for people to explore Boscombe beyond a single destination.

Improving Access, Safety and Public Realm

By increasing activity, visibility and care within the reserve, Woodland Walk contributes to a broader approach to reducing anti-social behaviour through positive use of public space.

Improvements that support this include:

  • clearer sightlines and improved access routes
  • refreshed gates, railings and boundary treatments
  • new seating, signage and points of interest that encourage dwell time
  • ongoing reviews of lighting, CCTV and security features

A well-used, well-maintained space helps create a calmer, safer environment where people feel comfortable spending time.

Nature, Art and Biodiversity Enhancements

Nature and creativity sit at the heart of Woodland Walk. Since works began, the reserve has welcomed a wide range of features that celebrate wildlife, craftsmanship and the natural environment.

Highlights include:

  • hand-carved wooden sculptures by local artist Tom Harvey, created from wind-fallen timber
  • playful carved stepping-stone blocks that add interactive moments for families
  • arboretum and horticultural enhancements, including new blossom trees and sensory planting
  • bird and bat boxes with information panels installed by volunteers
  • new trees, welcome signs and information lecterns across the reserve

A bird box camera was installed in January 2026, offering a live, non-intrusive way for people to observe local wildlife.

Creative Learning and Community Activity

Woodland Walk has become a place for learning, creativity and connection. Local school children, volunteers and community groups have been actively involved throughout the project.

Recent and ongoing initiatives include:

  • school visits and artist-led talks exploring craftsmanship and wildlife
  • creative workshops such as whittling and macramé
  • mindfulness and wellbeing sessions set within the natural environment
  • Playful Places installations that bring imagination and character to the trail

These activities encourage regular, positive use of the reserve and support both mental and physical wellbeing.

Volunteering, Ecotherapy and Long-Term Care

Community stewardship is central to Woodland Walk's future. Volunteers, supported by The Parks Foundation, have played a key role in planting, installation work and ongoing care.

Through The Parks Foundation, visitors can:

  • find out how to volunteer and become actively involved in maintaining Woodland Walk
  • take part in the Foundation's ecotherapy and wellbeing programmes
  • learn more about local wildlife and conservation activities

Work is also progressing towards a Woodland Walk management plan and Local Nature Reserve (LNR) designation, helping guide future maintenance, improvements and long-term protection.

A Lasting Green Asset for Boscombe

The improvements delivered at Woodland Walk have strengthened its role as a peaceful escape, a learning environment and a community gathering space. By balancing access, creativity and conservation, the project has enhanced the reserve while preserving its natural charm.

Woodland Walk now stands as a greener, safer and more engaging destination, supporting biodiversity, wellbeing and community life in Boscombe for years to come.
