Sea of Creativity Events Programme & Artwork

Boscombe’s transformation is well underway, and art and culture are at the heart of it! We're working alongside The Black Cherry, a vibrant theatre and music venue, to deliver our Sea of Creativity events programme across Boscombe. By collaborating with talented local artists, we aim to boost the cultural scene and create dozens of new jobs in the area.

Our Sea of Creativity programme features around four events per year, held either in the town centre or at The Black Cherry. Local creative businesses and charities take the lead in delivering these unique and interactive events. You can find out more about past events here.

In addition to the events, we've also funded the creation of several public art installations. Read on to learn more about them!

Completed public art projects

We’ve completed a number of public art projects over the last few years, including:

2021: The Boscombe Owl in Ashley Cross

We teamed up with Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe (BEAF) to breathe life into the area through the creation of stunning new murals. BEAF’s first project was a stunning 50-foot owl mural by local artist Technicolour Moon, also known as Krishna Malla. It went up in 2021 and pays homage to a real owl that lives in Boscombe Gardens. You can visit the Boscombe Owl on the side of a large building on Ashley Road.

2022: Centenary Way underpass mural

We commissioned MBN ARTS, a local organisation known for their creative and custom projects, to transform the walls and ceiling of the 78-foot long pedestrian underpass by Boscombe Bus Station on Centenary Way.

A nature theme was chosen to reflect the beauty of the heathland, woodlands, coastline, and wildlife Bournemouth is known for. Before the mural’s creation, a design competition was held for the students at Kings Park Primary School, and the winning entries were then incorporated into the final mural by the artist Humble Cherub. The whole project took about 12 days to complete.

2022: 3D projection mapping by Coastal BID

We provided funding to Coastal BID, a Bournemouth-based independent nonprofit, to spruce up Boscombe with new planters, festoon lighting, and the most exciting part - the UK's first permanent 3D projection mapping on a high street!

The digital projector beams moving artwork from the top of the Sovereign Centre to the building opposite, covering a surface area of almost 650 sq ft and adding a burst of colour and light to the area. Its innovative design earned Coastal BID the Place Management Award at the British BID Awards!
